Why fish needs a board
- A rigid base. When removing the air, the vacuum machine presses the film around the product, and without a board the fillet gets crushed and loses its shape.
- Bag protection. The board covers sharp edges, fins and bones that could puncture the film.
- Display. The board colour works as a background: on gold or black, fish looks more expensive and noticeable.
Three types of board for three tasks
| Task | Board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chilled and frozen fish in a vacuum bag | Zolotoy List laminated board | The board is covered with metallised film: it does not get soggy in a humid environment and keeps its shape |
| The product releases a lot of juice: fillets, steaks, meat | Absorbent pad | Juice and fat go into the absorbent layer, and the surface under the film stays dry |
| Premium presentation, vertical display | Board for skin packaging | The film hugs the product and seals to the board — the product does not shift |
Board colour
Laminated boards come in gold (several shades), silver, black, white pearl, a custom Pantone colour and with full-colour printing. Lamination is one-sided or two-sided.
- Gold — a classic for red fish and caviar, looks festive.
- Black — a contrasting background for fillets and steaks that emphasises the product’s colour.
- White pearl — a light, neutral background for white fish and seafood.
- Printed — the board becomes part of the brand: logo, recipe, product information.
If there is a metal detector on the line
Metallised film can trigger a metal detector. To keep metal control, choose a white pearl or black non-metallised board: they do not trigger the detector, and the black one gives the same contrasting background.
Size and shape
The board should be slightly larger than the product: that way it covers the edges and does not puncture the bag with its corners. Popular sizes are usually in stock, and for non-standard products the board is made in the required size and configuration.
How to choose: a short checklist
- How much juice does the product release? A lot — an absorbent pad; little — a laminated board.
- What packaging: a vacuum bag or skin?
- Is there a metal detector on the line?
- What background is needed on the shelf, and is printing needed?
- What is the portion size?
It is best to test the board on your product: we send samples for a trial on your line.
