Boards for lines with a metal detector: why gold does not work and what to choose

A metal detector on the line is now the norm in food production. But the familiar gold and silver boards trigger it. Here is why, and which board to choose to keep both metal control and a shelf-ready look.

Why a line needs a metal detector

A metal detector catches foreign metal particles in the finished product: shavings from equipment, knife fragments, wire. Retail chains and food safety systems require it, so more and more fish, meat and ready-meal producers install detectors. The product is checked already packed — together with the board and film.

Why gold and silver do not work

The gold and silver colour of a board comes from metallised films with a very thin layer of aluminium. For the detector this is metal. A pack on such a board triggers the detector or forces you to lower its sensitivity — which means real foreign particles are caught less reliably. Neither suits a producer.

Black boards on the market are most often made from metallised film — they look black too, but the detector reacts to them. So when ordering, make sure you ask for a non-metallised black board.

How we make metal-free boards

We colour the film for board lamination ourselves. So a non-metallised board can be not only white or black but any Pantone colour — for example, the signature colour of your brand. The board stays the same: moisture-resistant, rigid and holding the product’s shape during vacuum packing.

How to test a board on your line

  1. Tell the technologist which metal detector you use and at what sensitivity.
  2. We send samples of a non-metallised board in the size and colour you need.
  3. Run several packs with product through the detector at working settings.
  4. If everything is fine, we fix the Pantone colour and size for the production order.

Quick answers

Does a metal detector react to a gold board?

Yes. The gold and silver colour comes from metallised films with an aluminium layer, and the detector sees it. Lines with a metal detector need a non-metallised board.

Which board does not trigger a metal detector?

A non-metallised one: white pearl, metal-free black or a board in any Pantone colour.

Is a black board always metal-free?

No. Black boards are often made from metallised film, and the detector reacts to them. When ordering, ask for a non-metallised black board.

Can a metal-free board be made in our brand colour?

Yes. We colour the film ourselves, so we make non-metallised boards in any Pantone colour.
